Biggest solar-powered boat sails into Brisbane

The MS TURANDOR PlanetSolar sailed into Brisbane last Sunday. It is a multihull vessel topped by a large array of solar panels and is the biggest ever solar boat is both silent and clean. My friend Gabriel went to witness the arrival and sent me these pictures:

On its round-the-globe expedition, the TURANOR* PlanetSolar will pioneer the use of sustainable energy technology on water. It is different from anything that has happened in the field of mobility to date. This solar catamaran uses the very latest cutting-edge technology available on the market. Our intention is to demonstrate that high-performance solar mobility can be realised today by making innovative use of existing materials and technology.

The first round-the-world trip powered by solar energy will be realised, with stopovers along the Equator, where the maximum amount of sunlight is available. PlanetSolar’s four-man crew will cross the Atlantic Ocean, the Panama Canal, the Pacific Ocean, the Indian Ocean and finally the Suez Canal, before returning to the Mediterranean.

The stopovers will be organised in large port cities (Miami, Cancun, Brisbane, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Singapour, Abu Dhabi etc.); they will give the project a high profile and will be used as a promotional platform for renewable energies, especially solar.

Crossing all seven oceans, the crew will disembark on different continents. The boat will be received as an important ambassador of the solar mobility idea.

Therefore the stopover cities visited by the MS TURANOR PlanetSolar are very important platforms to spread our various messages. We want to show that we should not squander the natural resources we have at our disposal, demonstrate the potential of renewable energies and photovoltaics, and show that we already have the technology required for sustainability.

Jessica Watson's "Ella's Pink Lady"

On Easter Day, we walked over the Goodwill Bridge and spotted Jessica Watson's yacht, Ella's Pink Lady, in which the 16 year old Brisbane girl sailed non-stop all around the world. A fabulous achievement for this young lady. The yacht is in the Maritime Museum where a lot of people celebrated some sort of reunion.

A few years ago, the State Government built Busways to remove buses from the public roads. This has greatly improved public transport especially from outer suburbs. To make access to the bus stations, these overpasses were built including lifts. This is the Springwood overpass in Logan City.

One of the major building of historical interest is the Post Office in the centre of town. Built by the Government Architect in 1901 it has a commanding position on the main street and its front is decorated by the British coat of arms. It is a good example of Edwardian Classical design with arched windows and a very ornamental ceiling.

The Mansions is a heritage listed set of six three-storied terrace houses located on the corner of George Street and Margaret Street, Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. The building is significant because few terrace houses were ever built in Brisbane and even fewer remain intact today.

They were built during the Victorian era in 1889 for residential use. The classic Italian design was created by G.H.M Addison using plain red bricks. Cat sulptures on the building's parapet were rendered in New Zealand limestone.

Brisbane 1974 Flood Marker

In 1974, Brisbane experienced one of the worst floods in history. On Australia Day, January 29th cyclone Wanda came down from North Queensland and turned into a rain depression, causing flood levels to rise to the highest levels. 14 people lost their lives, 700 houses were completely destroyed and more than 5,000 people were left homeless.

This flood marker is the the Botanical Garden in the city.

We ended up in court yesterday! OK, settle down... It was Open Day at the new Magistrates Court in Brisbane, so we jumped on a train to Roma Street in the city and walked up George Street for the tour at 10 o'clock. One of the architects who designed the building acted as our guide and took us through the building including a couple of court rooms

Queensland's first Government House is located at Garden Points within the grounds of the University of Technology, at the end of George Street in Brisbane. The building was constructed for Queensland Governor Sir George Bowen and his wife, Lady Diamantina Bowen. The governor and his family moved into the building in April 1862. In 1910, the building was considered too small for the governor mainly because it lacked a ballroom, so the then governor Sir William MacGregor moved his family into the new Government House Fernberg at Paddington.

We went into town for lunch with Colin (HB) at the Harlequin Restaurant Central Station. On the way there we saw these two jazz musicians basking in Queen Street. I was immediately intrigued by the piccolo trumpet one was playing.

In Whistler B.C. we experienced a gondola ride between 2 mountain peaks. This gondola ride goes from Mount Whistler accross the valley to Mount Blackcomb

We're standing on Mt Whistler looking accross to Mount Blackcomb The ride takes 11 minutes and travel 4.4 kilometres high about the valley.

For the technophobes, here are seome stats:

There are two pillons on each mountain omly with an unsuported span of 3.024km (1.88 Miles)

The rope that drags the gondolas is 46mm diameter and the total haul rope with slack is 8.85 km

It has to be one of the gratest gondola rides in the worled and the system was supplied and installed by Swiss Engineers (of course).

We were in Skagway, Alaska, last week. Now for those of you who don't know, Skagway is a cute little town with wall to wall jewellery and souvenir shops open only a few months of the year. Most of them close for winter and the shopkeepers head south. The famous (or infamous, as most people in Skagway told me) Sarah Palin went to school in Skagway. So when I saw her in one of the shops, I asked Diane to take a picture of Sarah and me.

First encounter with a wild black bear

In Juneau, Alaska, we took a trip on a float plane to a lodge in a National Park where the rangers cooked us freshly caught salmon on a bar-b-que. While eating, we noticed a black bear wander up to the bar-b-que plate where he stood up and started to lick the plate. We all jumped up to take pictures including Diane who took these two. We were about 5m away from it.

It's not the 'chef' although it looks like it.

The bear had enough and wandered off into the woods.

During the encounter, the ranger was staying with us with a long stick. Just in case.

We stayed overnight at this beautiful village called Sun Peaks. I truly thought I was in Europe somewhere. It is a winter place with lots of ski lifts everywhere. So while we were there it looked a little deserted.

At the top of Queen Street stand the old imposing Bank of New South Wales building as part of Brisbane Heritage. It hasn't been a bank for many years but still looks majestic on the corner of George Street.

Convict built Wall? Or not!

It is a common urban myth that this wall facing the 'All Hallows School' in Ann Street was built by convicts. In fact, few convicts were sent to the Moreton Bay Penal Settlement after 1839, and the area was opened up for free settlers in 1842. Construction of the wall did not start until 1865.

I took this picture last Sunday driving home from Cleveland and I thought it would make an interesting post for Bright Colour theme day.
The road goes through Koala and Wallaby habitat even though it is in Capalaba, a Brisbane suburb.

This is not an unusual sign, there are many such signs in the suburbs, especially on the south side of Brisbane, Redland Bay and Logan City.

For my overseas visitors, I pose the question: Would you eat at a restaurant with a name like Hogs Breath? I can put your minds at ease and tell you that the food served there is usually fabulous, especially their rib fillet steaks which they cook for 18 hours resulting in a real tender and juicy steak. That is if the oven works and they haven't run out of steaks which has happened to us (now twice) at their Cleveland venue. We also visit their Loganholme venue where we have never had any problems.

Bruce, one of my regular blogging mates requested to see the new bridge to Redcliffe, so Diane and I drove there last Sunday. Now I must say it is not easy to take a photo of the longest bridge in Australia unless you're in a helicopter or a boat and from ashore we couldn't really get close enough to get a good shot.

I'm afraid that's the best we could do. It certainly makes it easier now to drive to the Redcliffe Peninsula.

This art deco building, was the bathing pavilion and is the entrance to the Redcliffe Pier which you can see partly through the opening.

We visited Redcliffe Peninsula on Sunday and found there was a market so we strolled through it and found these Happy Pants below.

I forgot to mention, we didn't buy them.

Fishermen on Moreton Bay

Steffen (lewi14) and Colin (HB) were right yesterday. The marking on the floor were taken at Central Railway Station in Brisbane and indicate where the train's doors end up and shows people how to exit and enter the trains.

We were on Redcliffe Peninsula yesterday. I took a picture of these two caracters fishing in the bay. The one standing, is he fishing or what?

It was a dull day and this shot was taken with full tele lens

U3A Camera Club Outing - Part 2

Following from Thursday's post, the U3A Camera Club visited Underwood park and then went next door to visit the Chun Tian Buddhist Temple to take more photos. We were guided through the complex by Helen, a member of the Temple Community

A piece of art on an artificial "beach" on the Brisbane river at Hamilton. Could it be called Cheese? No idea, maybe someone can enlighten us.
