THE STORY BRIDGE

The Story Bridge is one of the many bridges spanning the Brisbane River. It connects Kangaroo Point with Fortitude Valley. It was completed in 1940 and named after a senior public servant John Story, who advocated for the bridge to be built.

It is illuminated at night as you can see in the header picture. Bridge climbs are a tourist attraction.

Woody Point

Woody Point is part of the Redcliffe Peninsular that sticks out into Moreton Bay.

Raby Bay

Raby Bay is a canal suburb of Brisbane. It is on the edge of Moreton Bay. There are nice restaurants on the boardwalk.

Duplication of the Gateway Bridge

In 1986 the Gateway Bridge over the Brisbane River was opened. At that time it held the record for the longest prestressed concrete free cantilever stretching 260m/850 ft. Its shape was determined by air traffic (its close to the airport) and shipping.

Ye old Fruit Barrow

I really enjoyed coming across this fellow and his colourful street barrow in the CBD of Brisbane. It reminded me of when I was little and walking with my mum through the streets of Sydney and there were many street barrows. Now they are few and far between.

A Grey Day in Brisbane

Part of the CBD called Riverside. There are many exclusive clubs and restaurants on the river's edge.

South Bank Grand Arbour, Brisbane

The Grand Arbour is a 1km walk in the South Bank Gardens. It was designed by a Melbourne company and built in 1999. The steel tendrils are contorted into all different shapes. Wires pass through the tendrils to support colourful bougainvillea.

THE CITY HALL

Brisbane City hall was opened in 1930. The clock tower is 70 meters tall and was the tallest building in Brisbane. It is about to undergo a refurbishment worth millions of dollars.

Ann Street Presbyterian Church

Another little church tucked under high rise buildings. It is one of the oldest in Queensland about 150 years old.

A Brisbane City Church

Squashed among the highrise buildings is this lovely old church. It is the Albert St Uniting Church.

The Goodwill Bridge

The Goodwill Bridge is a pedestrian bridge crossing the Brisbane River from South Bank to the Botanical Gardens and the Queensland University of Technology.

WILLIAM JOLLY BRIDGE

The William Jolly Bridge was built in 1932. It is named after the first Lord Mayor of Brisbane. It is a three arch steel construction with a concrete veneer. It is in the Art Deco style. It is for vehicles.

KURILPA BRIDGE

Another new bridge was built in Brisbane last year. It opened on 4th Oct. It is called the Kurilpa Bridge. It spans the Brisbane River from Kurilpa point to Tank Stream Point. It is an aboriginal word for "place of water rats". It is a multi mast cable-stay structure and is used for pedestrians and cyclists only. It connects the CBD on the left with the Cultural Centre.

The Go Between Bridge

This is the latest bridge being constructed over the Brisbane River. The two sides have just been joined in the middle. It has been named "The Go Between Bridge", which sounds a little ordinary unless you know "The Go Betweens" were a famous Brisbane pop music group, and the bridge is named after them. Our daughter's sister in law was a member of the group.

The Story Bridge

The Brisbane River runs through the middle of the city. There are many bridges crossing the river. This one is the most famous and often used as an icon of Brisbane.
