BAFS Building George Strret

The old BAFS building, corner of George and Turbot Streets in Brisbane housed one of the earliest Chemist shops in Brisbane. Now it's a convenience store.

On the building are two years mentioned, 1885 and 1915, I have no idea what they mean or when the building was erected. Mybe someone can enlighten us.

  5. I love the old buildings. I suppose they are harder to heat or cool or whatever, but they have so much more character.

  6. There was a time when I only used BASF tapes. Now I use nobody's tapes, it's all discs now.

  7. How cute are the older buildings squeezed in among the newer, younger, bigger guys on the block!

  8. To Bruce, I don't think the BASF tapes were from the same people, as 'the foto'fanatic' pointed out, this was the Brisbane and Surround Friendly Society, they used to run Chemist shops.

  9. It's such a pity that so many old buildings have been replaced with these glass boxes ! In Brussels too ! They have demolished whole districts in the 60th and it looks so ugly now. And now they do it the other way around, they safe what is safable, even if it's only a front wall ! But it is too late, the damage has been done.

  10. It is always interesting to see the contrasts of old and new. And the foto fanatics historical background was very interesting.

  11. BAFS is the acronym for Benevolent Association of Friendly Societies. This organisation was founded as a way for the less well off people to access cheaper medicines. My Great Grandfather, Andrew Spink was a founding member and lived at this site before this building was built in 1885.
