This cannon is outside the Treasury Hotel in George Street


  1. Was it ever fired in earnest? Is this the treasury that is also a casino - I always have to smile when I think of these two words in the same breath!

  2. Keep it handy,,you never know when you might need to use it in some war.

  3. Yes, Paul, it's the hotel (belonging to) and next to the Treasury Casino. Not sure where the gun came from.

    I think the Napoleonic wars or maybe Crimea or the US Civil War?
    I think way back when the Russian Tsars had territorial ambitions for the Pacific, these types of guns were placed to deter a Russian fleet. Nothing of course happened. February 1904 – 5 September 1905! The Japanese Navy put a stop to the Tsar's ambitions.
