Rainbow Lorikett

A Rainbow Lorikeets (Trichoglossus Haematodus), taken in our garden.
The Rainbow Lorikeet is found in Australia, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea and other Pacific Islands. In Australia it is common along the eastern seaboard, from Queensland to South Australia.

  1. These birds look absolutely gorgeous, I like the curtain of foliage behind (is that a gum tree of sorts?).

Some years ago, somebody in Auckland thought that Rainbow Lorikeets would make a nice addition to our birdlife and released a few dozen of captive ones, much to the dismay of our Department of Conservation who feared that they would wreak havoc with our native birds. And they probably would; from what I have seen in Sydney, they are rather assertive creatures. (I think none of the lorikeets are left in the wild today.)

We do, however, have a small population of escaped sulphur crested cockatoos in the Waitakeres, and eastern rosellas are very common now.

  2. They are beautiful birds. My parents have one as a pet that can talk and mimic any whistle.

  3. So cute! I love seeing the movies where the parakeets fly free. In America, we only see them in cages, generally alone. Must be wonderful to live someplace where exotic birds fly about.

  6. What a beautiful bird. I'm so glad he is free and not living at Pet Smart waiting for someone to buy him.
