Victoria House Est 1875

Strolling along Brunswick Street in Fortitude Valley a couple of weeks ago, we spotted Victoria House. No idea if it is private or commercial as there were no markings other than this plaque specifying the year it was established. I really would love to know more about this house.

  2. Hi BB

I travelled past this establishment for about 7 years whilst working at the Archives and Record storage section of the Brisbane City Council. It was, so I was informed, by the Council archivist originally the home of a prominent Brisbane Doctor. It is now a series of 4 flats. It is heritage listed and was to be ripped down by developers in the early 2000's when this area went "up-market".
It certainly requires some renovations, BUT, all this has to be cleared by the Heritage Board and that as we all know is not an easy task.
Should you be "prepared" you could contact the Brisbane Heritage Society or whatever they call themselves and you may get your answers.

  3. I suppose there is a lane way out the back for your internal combustion machine to be parked somewhere.

  4. It is very English looking to my eyes. The sort of house that keeps the English weather at bay, rather than welcoming the Australian sun and fresh air. Built in 1875, it would not surprise me if there was no acknowledgement of the motor car at all.

Nice looking house, but rather impractical.

  5. look like it might be listed in heritage list especially if it's been built in the 1800.

  6. To Bruce and Julie.
If you look at the righthand side of the place, you will see that the building there is low-rise. I would suspect that when this place was built that is where the horse carriages and "buggys" came in, well before the advent of the motor car.
I would suspect that there is a lane-way at the back for the present residents to place their cars in, as leaving them in that street would be courting theft, break-ins and disaster.
I will endeavour to get further information from the archivist I worked with on this building and forward on to Bill.
    Cheers

  8. Andie, I took this photo with the telephoto lens from a long way off. No doubt camera shake is the reason for losing focus. Diane (Bill's other half)
